About the Event

Topic:

How Transitioning Can Impact Gender and Sexuality of Those in Relationships

The focus of the presentation will be centered on D. M. Maynard’s interviews with cisgender partners who shared about how certain aspects of sex and intimacy were affected throughout their relationship as their significant other began to identify as trans, non-binary, and/or was questioning their gender. It will also discuss in what ways some of the cisgender partners’ own gender expression and/or sexuality have been impacted by this shift in their relationship. In addition, time will be allotted to address the compelling role that gender dysphoria and grief have played in these relationships, which are based on the experiences and perspectives of partners and their partner who identifies on the transgender spectrum. The material offered during this presentation will incorporate critical information that many partners and those in trans communities expressed are essential for mental health professionals to be aware of when working with them individually and/or as a couple in a therapeutic setting.
